Chemical Labeling within REACH? Find out at SCHC Fall Meeting

by Craig Hodgson, on September 19, 2017

Chemical regulations and labeling will be front and center next week at the annual Fall Meeting of the Society for Chemical Hazard Communication (SCHC) in Arlington, VA. This small, intimate gathering of SCHC members and sponsors continues to be one of the most productive, educational and content-rich events in the industry, providing valuable updates on evolving regulations, while also allowing attendees to network and discuss specific business needs with their peers.

This year’s General Meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 26, has a full agenda including a morning plenary with the following expert speakers: Sven J. Rundman III of OSHA, Rosslynn Miller-Lee of Health Canada, a representative from Steptoe & Johnson, LLC, Darlene Susa-Anderson of ChemADVISOR, Inc., and Edmund C. Baird of the U.S. Dept. of Labor.

Not surprisingly GHS label requirements continue to be a hot topic, even with many of the labeling and communication deadlines well past due. Kicking off the program will be an update from OSHA on the HazCom 2012 standard (which was designed to align U.S. chemical manufacturers and supply chain partners with GHS requirements). Later in the morning there will be a status on the GHS Global List Pilot Project, which aims to create a universally recognized list of classified chemicals.

REACH, or the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals, is the European Union’s regulation to address the production and use of chemical substances. And like GHS, REACH is also top of mind for many companies, especially with a May 2018 deadline approaching for low-volume hazardous chemical labels. There will be two REACH-focused presentations in the afternoon that all attendees will want to check out.
