Integrating Label Printing with Oracle® WMS in a Global Enterprise

The Challenge: Tough Criteria for a New Label Application
A new Oracle WMS rollout prompted a large electronic manufacturer to reconsider its label printing process. Because the company was dependent on production labeling around the clock, it set the bar high for the replacement label application. The new system had to:

  • Integrate with Oracle WMS
  • Drive 38 printers of various makes and models, including handheld printers
  • Accommodate five to seven sites, including Hong Kong
  • Support double-byte languages
  • Run on different operating system platforms
  • Offer a 24x7 hot failover capability
    • Be more efficient

The Solution: Oracle-Driven System over a WAN
The Oracle consultant recommended the Loftware™ solution based on previous experience with Loftware. He was confident that the Loftware Print Server, Premier edition would integrate easily with Oracle's WMS solution. Because the Loftware system supports a diverse array of platforms, printers, handheld and palm PCs, the company could print anywhere, any time. Loftware's international language support satisfied the need for both single — and double — byte characters, and support for Microsoft® clustering technology enables Loftware to deliver robust backup capabilities In addition, scalability added long-term value to the manufacturer.

The electronics firm spread the overall implementation over two years so it could make changes systematically. In the new label solution, the Oracle WMS runs on UNIX. It drops an XML file to the Loftware Print Sever™ on a mounted NT Server in Ohio. Loftware's TCP/IP technology gives access to labels and send them to print in Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Australia and Japan.
